US Route 40

Washington County, MD - 2015

Description

Maryland DOT typically uses gap graded asphalt on their surface mixes to combat reflective cracking. In order to find a superior method, they set up an experimental project on US 40 in Washington County near Hagerstown, MD to evaluate three surface mixes: PG 64E-22 gap graded, dense graded PG 64S-22, and finally, a dense graded PG 64S-22 mix containing FORTA-FI®. The fiber was also used at a busy intersection that was badly rutted, shown in the top right picture above. So far, the sections are performing well for this experimental overlay project, showing that FORTA-FI® can be used successfully in areas where rutting and/or cracking are issues.
