Thurston County Maintenance Overlays

Olympia, WA - 2016

Description

Thurston County specified a 3” WMA section in two 1.5” lifts, both reinforced with FORTA-FI®. In the past, the use of conventional asphalt typically resulted in significant top-down fatigue cracking due to the intense car and truck traffic. The County’s objective in utilizing FORTA-FI® was to add strength and durability to their pavements and increase their design life. In addition, there was the desire to reduce future maintenance costs by decreasing the amount of crack sealing and other maintenance work required during the overlay’s lifespan. The mix design included a PG64-22 binder and 35% RAP. The County selected a WMA mix temperature of about 280° F to reduce fumes on the job site. FORTA- FI’s single blend technology for mixing temps between 230° F and 350° F allowed the asphalt plant to alter the mixing temperature “on the fly” without changing the type of fiber used.
